Scenicruiser

About the Scenicruiser

General Motors built 1,001 PD-4501 buses from 1954 to 1956 delivered to 17 different Greyhound companies. The Scenicruisers were built with dual straight-in 4V-71 diesel engines driving a single transmission through a fluid coupling. Performance was lacking leading to a dispute between GM and Greyhound. That led to all being repowered with transverse Detroit Diesel 8V-71 engines driving through a Spicer four-speed transmission. The work was done by Marmon-Herrington over an 11-month period beginning in  October 1961. The Scenicruisers held down Greyhound mainline schedules for the next ten years.
