T.A.M. Transportation Company

One of the more unusual operations in the Hayward, CA area was the T.A.M. Transportation Company (T=Taylor, A=Anderson, and M=Martens). Operating without any State PUC authority of any sort they operated for perhaps two years on four routes from 1st &”A” Streets in downtown Hayward. Equipment consisted of one used model 30A Twin Coach, a former Key System 400 series.
One route operated to the Kelly Hill area; another along East Avenue; another to the Hayward Highlands area and the fourth route was into the south Hayward area. Frequency consisted of from six to nine schedules per day on each route with one bus handling the entire service.
Initially the service was an outgrowth of the Hayward Area Community and Improvement Clubs. The groups had desired better transportation to the growing areas but were rebuffed by the management of Key System. The service was “private” to the extent that members and associate members
or family members of any community or improvement club having a contract with T.A.M. Transportation Company. Technically the bus was chartered by the community operate the service and limited to the club members. fare for members without a weekly ride card (which purchased from the driver) was a high $1.25.The service lasted about two years when the various improvement and community clubs felt it was too expensive to continue the service. The model 30A Twin Coach was last seen in an auto wrecking yard nearby.
In later years all of the area served by T.A.M. would be served by AC Transit routes.
