George Powell

George Powell was the Superintendent of Maintenance for SCRTD. Stephen Schwarzwald worked for George.

George is responsible for the #7103 – Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) becoming the first acquisition of the Pacific Bus Museum.

George Powell’s Career

George Powell came to Los Angeles in 1945 to help with preparations for the takeover of The Los Angeles Railway by the National City Lines management. The new operation would become known as Los Angeles Transit Lines.

Between 1945 and 1947, when LATL formally came into being, George studied LA Railway’s operations and facilities with an eye toward their further development. Powell also oversaw the retirement of the trolley coaches and the introduction of a standardized motorcoach fleet.

Rising to the position of director of maintenance, George’s input in the area of transit coach design resulted on some “LA only” products. The FIxible SCRTD 7100 series is example of this, and PBM’s 7103 restoration will be a terrific memorial.

A Sad Obituary

Our longtime member, and mechanical guru, George Powell died on December 2. In mid October, George had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer. Following his retirement from SCRTD, George founded Huntington Park based Western Diesel Electric, an enterprise which his son, Tom, is committed to continuing.

Tremendously respected by many of our members, George had a particular affinity for solving antique motorcoach repair problems… In tribute to George, our museum has decided to launch memorial restoration project…
