The most
modern intercity bus in the PBMs museum fleet is the Las Vegas-Tonopah-Reno Stage
Lines #172. This General Motors PD4106 was delivered new to LTR Stage Lines in 1964. An
intercity carrier, LTRs main route extended from Reno through Las Vegas to Phoenix,
AZ. In the 1960s LTR operated a US government contract using as many as 70 coaches
daily transporting workers between Las Vegas and the Nuclear Ordinance Test Site in
Mercury, NV. The contract required no coach being older 5 years old and #172 was part of a
group of eight coaches (#165-172) purchased for LTRs commitment of new coaches for
the contract that year. In the early 1970s #172 was sold to Oregon Coachways in
Eugene, Oregon. In need of a 35 bus for special tour work, Richard Twinning, owner
of Scenic Hyway Tours in San Francisco, acquired #172 from Oregon Coachways in 1986. The
#172 was donated to the PBM in 1996 along with five other buses as part of Richard
Twinnings historical bus collection.
